Production Guide
Using the Oil Formulation Calculator
| Before you begin: You will find the calculator under Production → Oil Formulation. It pulls from the oil packages already in your Vault, and it can fill in potency from lab results attached to those packages. No setup is needed — just have an idea of what you are making and how many units you need. |
What Is the Oil Formulation Calculator?
The Oil Formulation Calculator helps you plan exactly how much oil to pull for a production run. You tell it what you are making and how strong it should be, pick the oils you want to use, and it does the math for you.
The key idea is the “balance” row. One of your oils is set as the balance, and the calculator fills in its quantity automatically so the whole blend lands exactly on your target. Everything else is up to you.
When you are done, you can print a formulation sheet for your team or send the oils straight to a batch as planned materials.
The Two Modes
The calculator works in two modes. Pick the one that matches what you are making — everything after that works the same way.
- Edibles — you plan by how much THC goes into each unit. Example: 1,000 gummies at 9 mg THC each.
- Vapes & concentrates — you plan by how much oil goes into each unit. Example: 1,000 carts at 1 g each.
The only real difference is what you type in the Targets box:
| Edibles targets | Vapes & concentrates targets |
| Units — how many you are making | Units — how many you are making |
| mg THC / unit — strength of each unit | Grams / unit — fill weight of each unit |
| Total mg THC — computed | Total grams — computed |
In Edibles mode the balance oil’s grams are worked out from the total milligrams of THC. In Vapes & concentrates mode they are worked out from the total fill weight, and the Blend Summary then shows you the resulting mg / unit and Blended Oil Potency so you can check strength.
A Quick Tour of the Screen
The calculator is split into four areas:
- Formulated for — the product and batch this formulation is for.
- Targets — how many units you are making and how strong (or how heavy) each one should be.
- Oils — the source packages and other ingredients going into the blend.
- Blend Summary — on the right side. Shows your buffer and rounding settings, live totals, and a per-oil breakdown. This is also where you will find the Print and Use in batch buttons.
Building a Formulation
The examples below use Edibles mode (1,000 gummies at 9 mg). If you are in Vapes & concentrates mode, swap in your units and grams per unit — the steps are the same.
| Step 1 Choose what you are formulating for |
These fields are for your records. They appear on the printed formulation sheet so your team knows exactly what the numbers are for. |
| Step 2 Pick your mode |
Edibles is selected by default. The three target fields change to match the mode you pick. |
| Step 3 Enter your targets |
There are three target fields. Type any two of them and the third fills in automatically.
The fields you typed show a “your input” label. The one the calculator worked out shows “computed”. Click Reset if you want to start over. |
| Step 4 Add your first oil |
The Oils box starts with one row, Oil 1, already marked as the balance.
Once a package is selected, the row shows how many grams are left in that package (for example, “62.4 g remaining”). If your formulation needs more than is left, the text turns red and says “over!” |
| Step 5 Set the potency |
The calculator needs to know how strong the oil is. You can type it, or pull it from lab results. To type it:
To pull it from lab results:
Lab results appear here when your tracking system (Metrc, BioTrack, etc.) has results attached to that package. If nothing shows up, type the potency from your COA instead. |
| Tip: With a single oil set as the balance, you are done with the math already. As soon as the potency is in, the Quantity field fills in with exactly how many grams to pull, and the Blend Summary shows a green “Blend matches target” badge. |
| Step 6 Understand the balance row |
Every formulation can have one balance row. The balance is the oil whose quantity the calculator works out for you.
|
| Step 7 Add more oils |
You can blend several packages together — for example, to use up the end of one package before opening the next.
Example: Oil 1 is 5 g of distillate at 75.82%. Oil 2 is the balance. The calculator works out that Oil 2 needs 6.87 g to reach 9,000 mg total. |
| Step 8 Add non-cannabis ingredients |
Terpenes, flavoring, or other ingredients that are not tracked in Metrc or BioTrack can be added too. They count toward the total weight of the blend but add no THC.
Some states treat cannabinoids like CBD as tracked items. If your CBD distillate has a Metrc or BioTrack tag, add it as a regular source package instead of a non-cannabis row. For vapes, a non-cannabis row for terpenes set to % of total is a handy way to plan a fixed percentage of your fill. The balance oil adjusts to make up the rest of the weight. |
| Step 9 Add a buffer and set rounding |
These settings are in the Adjustments area at the top of the Blend Summary. Both apply to the balance oil’s grams only.
Buffer adds extra on top of the calculated amount. Rounding shapes the final number so it matches how your team actually weighs and pours. |
| Step 10 Read the Blend Summary | ||||||||||||||
The Blend Summary on the right updates as you work. When your oils add up to the target you will see a green “Blend matches target” badge.
|
| Step 11 Print or save a formulation sheet |
The sheet includes Prepared by / Date, Verified by / Date, and Notes lines at the bottom so your team can sign off on the run. |
| Step 12 Send the oils to a batch |
When you are happy with the formulation, you can add the oils to a batch as planned materials. The tags you chose become the materials to be consumed on that batch, with the quantity already filled in.
Only tagged source packages are sent to the batch. Non-cannabis rows stay on the formulation sheet for reference. |
Good to Know
- The calculator does not change anything in Metrc or BioTrack. It only plans quantities. Consumption is recorded when you run the batch as usual.
- Numbers are not saved between visits. If you want a record of a formulation, print it or save it as a PDF before you leave the page.
- The g remaining shown on each oil row is the current quantity Hashio has for that package.
